Students and parents may purchase commemorative keepsakes to remember their years at Wakefield Middle School.  Money raised goes towards the 8^th Grade Celebration and Legacy Project.  Please return the money and order form to your team’s Social Studies teacher by Friday, April 30^th.

          Item Descriptions:

• 8^th Grade T-Shirts – The t-shirt will include a design on the front, and the names of the 8th grade class members will form a “10″ on the back.
• 8^th Grade Commemorative DVD – 8th graders may purchase a commemorative DVD of images taken throughout the year. It includes hundreds of pictures set to music.
• Commemorative Lanyard Keychain – A “Wakefield Wolves” lanyard keychain.

Why should you give blood?

• There is no substitute for blood transfusions.
• Becoming a volunteer blood donor is an easy way to help people in need.
• Your one donation can make a difference in the lives of up to 3 patients who need a transfusion.
• Approximately 60% of our population is eligible to give blood, and only 5% actually donate.
• Rex Blood Services needs to collect blood from 100 donors EVERY DAY to meet the needs of patients at our local hospitals.
• You will help to save lives!

To be eligible to donate blood a person must:

• Be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and have not have donated blood in the last 56 days
• There is no longer a 12 month deferral for receiving a tattoo if performed at a licensed facility in the United States (Please check with a staff member or donor center for a list of acceptable states)
• Have not had cancer in the past 2 years, even in remission. (Basil cell carcinoma of the skin and cervical or breast cancer In-Situ accepted)
• Have not traveled to a malarial risk area within the past 12 months.
• Have not spent 3 months or more in The UK from 1980-1996. (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands)
• Have not spent more than 5 years in Europe since 1980
• Have not spent 6 months or more on a military base or associated with a military base in Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany from 1980 through 1990

The homeroom class that signs up the most blood donors will also win an ice cream party!

Our second dance/activity night of the year, the Winter Wonderland dance, is on December 12, 2008.  The sixth grade dance is from 6:00-7:15 pm and the seventh & eighth grade dance is from 7:30-9:00 pm.

In addition to a dance with a DJ, we will also have:

• A Movie
• A Guitar Hero concern on the huge auditorium screen
• Games (board/table games and ping pong)
• Food (candy, popcorn, cotton candy, pizza) and drinks
• and lots more!

  • If you think your parents can help, please fill out the form with your information and I will give them a call.
  • We need at least five parent chaperones the day of the dance and at least one to sell tickets every day or we can’t have a dance.

4.    Canned Food Drive (see canned food drive information sheet)
The 2008 Canned Food Drive will begin on Monday, November 17, and continue until Friday, December 5. Members of the WMS Student Council Community Service Committee will work with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to distribute all food items collected. Food will go directly to help needy families in our area.

1. Each homeroom will be given a cardboard box to collect cans and other non-perishable food items as they come in:
2. NO HOME-PACKAGED ITEMS of any kind will be accepted. Only commercially canned or boxed food that will not spoil may be donated.
3. NO PET FOOD or any other item unfit for human consumption may be donated.
4. NO EXPIRED FOOD ITEM with a date that already passed may be donated.
5. Ramen noodle packages, extremely small cans/boxes, or similar items will count as one “can” for every TEN items donated.
6. We reserve the right to reject any item for donation.

2.  Each Student Council homeroom representative is responsible to:

• Motivate the students of their homeroom to bring in as many food items as possible to help needy families in our community.
• To keep an accurate count of how many cans and other food items have been placed into their homeroom collection box.
• To bring this box directly to the Student Services conference room with a “can count” attached whenever it fills up, and on all designated “collection days” (see below).
